EUROPEAN CREDIT TRANSFER SYSTEM
(ECTS)
The European Credit
Transfer system (ECTS) was introduced by the European Commission to
provide for single procedure ensuring that studies completed abroad
will be acceptable. The acceptance of the period of study completed
abroad and diplomas of foreign institutions is a condition precedent to
establish "Europe without Borders" with regard to education, where
students and teachers could move without any obstacles. ECTS enables
the presentation of clear principles for study and credits
contributing, at the same time, to co-operation between institutions
and the expansion of their educational offer for students. The system
allows institutions to recognise students' achievements since it
applies commonly comprehensible measures, i.e. credits and grades, and
enables the accurate interpretation of rules applicable in the systems
of higher education of various countries.

ECTS will be also
implemented at the Powi¶lański College in Kwidzyn in order to
recognise the period of studies completed abroad and diplomas of
foreign institutions.
The purpose
of ECTS is not only to enable students to leave to foreign
institutions, but enable and promote student exchange between
departments of Polish institutions participating in ECTS, as well. The
full recognition of studies means that the period of study abroad or at
another Polish institution (including examinations and other forms of
assessment) replaces a comparable period of study at the Powi¶lański
College in Kwidzyn (including examinations and other forms of
assessment). Studies may be recognised in spite of the fact that the
content of the programme of study at the institution receiving a given
student is different that the programme of the Powi¶lański College in
Kwidzyn. ECTS is applied based on the mutual trust between co-operating
institutions.
The document was prepared together with the National Agency of the
European SOKRATES/ERASMUS programme based on the so called Erasmus
Charter.
